  6. 6 The great lover
Step 1 · Start here

What God says about sex

1Sex is God's will for every married couple.

It is part of the life God intends for a husband and wife, not something he merely puts up with.

2Sex is God's will way before the fall.

Adam and Eve were told to be fruitful and multiply (Gen 1:28) before sin entered in Genesis 3. It belongs to the original design.

3Sex is nothing shameful.

The first couple were naked and felt no shame (Gen 2:25). Shame was not part of God's design for the marriage bed.

4Sex within marriage is pure and undefiled / holy.

Marriage is to be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept undefiled (Heb 13:4).

5Sex is to be enjoyed throughout a couple's lifetime.

Not only the early years. It is meant to continue and grow across the whole of married life.

6 · The boundarySex outside of marriage is fornication and adultery.

The line is drawn to protect what sex is for: the union of one husband and one wife.

Step 2 · Why God made it

Four purposes of sex

First purpose

Union

Sex is for the married couple to come into union.

The first purpose of sex is not to produce children; it is to produce unity between the husband and the wife.

To “be one flesh” is a figure of speech. It means a union or bonding in the invisible realm of the soul and spirit. We call that the soul-tie: the body, soul and spirit are somehow blended and bonded together.

Second purpose

Communicating love

Sex is for communicating love to your mate.

In God's plan, sex was intended to provide a means of total revealing oneself to be loved, of pouring one's energies and deepest love, affection, hopes, and dreams into your spouse.

Third purpose

Pleasure

Sex is for pleasure.

Fourth purpose

Procreation

Sex is for the procreation of children.

“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth …’” (Genesis 1:28)

Step 3 · Put it into practice

Ten biblical ways of satisfying one's spouse sexually

The posture

  1. 1Anticipate that the sex will be enjoyable.
  2. 2You must fulfill your spouse's sexual needs regularly.
  3. 3Fulfill your spouse's sexual needs affectionately and tenderly.
A little more

On 1. The most important sex organ in the human body is the brain.

On 2. The word “render” is an imperative command. It is also given in a present continuous tense. In Greek, “render” means to pay back a debt.

Men are like light bulbs while women are more like an iron. God created us this way to make sex an art form, not something mechanical. For the man, it is going to require a lot of love, skill and patience to set the wife up for satisfying sex.

Whose body it is

  1. 4Your spouse has authority over your body for his or her pleasure.
  2. 5Abstaining from sex is permissible only if both spouses agree.
  3. 6Restore normal sexual relations as soon as possible.

Spirit and setting

  1. 7Good sex is effective spiritual warfare.
  2. 8Create the right atmosphere for sex.
“I am trembling; you have made me as eager for love …” Song 6:12 (GNB)

Song of Solomon in the Good News Bible translation:

  • Fragrances 1:12
  • Complimenting 1:15-16
  • Privacy 2:3-4
  • Affectionate touching 2:6
  • Attractive attire 4:9, 11
  • Intimate talk 4:12
  • Unhurried time 5:1
  • Special places 7:12
  • Total commitment 8:6-7

Speak and respect

  1. 9Communicate with your spouse what you need in sex.
  2. 10Do not do any sexual act that offends your spouse.
Step 4 · When it does not come easily

Every couple will struggle to come to a satisfying sex life

“Studies have revealed that satisfactory adjustment of sexual relations takes the average couple about six years. Twelve percent of the couples were able to make satisfactory adjustments within the first year of marriage. About ten percent took to twenty years to arrive at the adjustments that gave them a satisfying love life.”

Four reasons why a spouse may not want sex

A technique problem
An emotional problem
A biological problem
A timing problem
A little more · the biological problem

Erectile dysfunction (ED)

About 10 percent of all males will be unable to achieve or maintain an erection at some point in their lives.

Possible reasons:

  • Diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis and heart disease cause 70 percent of ED cases.
  • Stress, anxiety, guilt, depression, low self-esteem, and fear of sexual failure cause 10 to 20 percent of ED cases.
  • Chronic alcoholism.
  • Smoking.
  • Overweight.
  • Injury to nerves and arteries near the penis.
  • Medicines like blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, etc.

Treatment: counseling, medication (Viagra, Cialis, etc.), surgery.

For women

Some women may suffer from vaginismus (unable to penetrate, or burning pain upon penetration attempts). In severe cases, some may have a condition called dyspareunia (pain during or after sexual intercourse).

Professional therapy is often needed and sometimes, surgery may be necessary. The right doctor to consult with is a gynaecologist or urologist.

Step 5 · What gets in the way

Pornography

What is pornography? It involves sexually explicit material intended to arouse. It is readily accessible through a variety of media, predominantly the Internet, and its consumption varies greatly among individuals.

What is the issue?

Unrealistic expectations

Pornography often portrays sexual activity in an unrealistic manner, which can lead to skewed perceptions and expectations about sex. Real-life intimacy is about connection, understanding, and mutual respect, aspects often missing in porn.

Addiction

Excessive consumption can lead to compulsive behavior or addiction, affecting personal life, work, and relationship.

Dissatisfaction and insecurities

Regular use of pornography can lead to decreased satisfaction with your partner's physical appearance, sexual performance, or the frequency and nature of sexual activities. It can also induce feelings of inadequacy or insecurity in your partner.

Step 6 · Where it leads

What makes a great lover?

I need to constantly keep three things strong in my marriage:

Passion
Affection
Pleasure

A great lover is someone who can satisfy one woman over a lifetime, and who can be satisfied by one woman all his life long.

“A wife is not a guitar; you can't play on her and then hang her on the wall.”
